Who are the six women “a source of pride for the Republic” for Mattarella

Six women, six stories, six reasons for pride and reflection for Italy. In his speech at the Quirinale, on the occasion of the Republic Day, President Sergio Mattarella mentioned Lina Merlin, Nilde Iotti, Liliana Segre, Tina Anselmi, Luana D’Orazio, Samantha Cristoforetti, because, he explained, they represent the progress made by the Republic in its 75 years of history.

Lina Merlin, a member of parliament elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1946, then a senator for the Socialist Party, promoted the law that abolished the houses of tolerance in Italy in 1958, and was remembered as a “pioneer of female dignity”.

Nilde Iotti, the first woman to be elected to the presidency of the Chamber, marked “a decisive step in affirming the leadership of women in the life of institutions”, even if, today, “we are not yet at the goal of full equality”.

And, Mattarella affirmed, if “Italy today, also in terms of civil rights, is more mature and aware, better than that of seventy-five years ago, it is also thanks to the value of memory told by people like Liliana Segre, tireless witness of civilization and humanity ».

The president also recalled, among “the great reforms” that “changed the profile of Italy”, “the establishment, in 1978, of the National Health Service, by another woman, the first to become a minister, Tina Anselmi“, Protagonist of major reforms:” The statute of workers, school reforms, in particular the institution of the single middle school and the raising of compulsory schooling, the new family law, the institution, in 1978, of the National Health Service”.

The figure of Luana D’Orazioon the other hand, he recalls that “conditions that are not bearable for the collective conscience still persist, such as deaths at work. The memory of Luana D’Orazio’s smile commits everyone to the duty of addressing the issue of worker safety with determination and rigor ». The country, however, has not stopped: Italy boasts «creativity. Skills. Skills that make us avant-garde in many sectors. Examples are women and men engaged in research and in the sectors of innovation and the most advanced technologies ».

Among them, another Italian woman who “today makes us proud: Samantha Cristoforetti, the first European called to command the international space station ».
