World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Jašarević said on Tuesday (21) that he regrets United States President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the global agency and hopes he changes his mind.
“We hope that the US will reconsider, and we really hope that there will be a constructive dialogue for the benefit of everyone, for Americans, but also for people around the world,” said Jašarević, at a press conference in Geneva.
The new American president announced the country’s departure from the organization shortly after taking office on Monday (20).
The Trump administration formally withdrew from the organization in July 2020, as the Covid-19 pandemic spread across the world.
The text of the executive order cites the “mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic by the organization that emerged from Wuhan, China, and other global health crises, its failure to adopt urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from the inappropriate political influence of states.” -WHO members” as reasons for withdrawal.
