Who is Odilo Scherer, archbishop of SP who was once considered to be Pope

Archbishop Dom Odilo Scherer, 75 years old, asked to resign his position in the Archdiocese of São Paulo this Tuesday morning (8). His replacement will be chosen by Pope Francis in two years, when Dom Odilo effectively leaves the Archdiocese.

As Archbishop of São Paulo, he had served since March 21, 2007, completing 17 years in office.

Born on September 21, 1949, in the city of Cerro Largo (RS), Odilo has German ancestry, and carries with him the rich cultural heritage of his family, in addition to the religious tradition of his community.

With training in philosophy and theology, obtained in renowned Brazilian and Italian institutions, he began his training at the São José Seminary, in Toledo (PR), an institution founded by Dom Armando Círio, where his rectors were priests Santo Pelizer and Luís Vacaro.

He then transferred to the São José Minor Seminary, in Curitiba (PR). He completed his Philosophy studies at the Seminário Maior Rainha dos Apostolos, in Curitiba, and at the Faculty of Education of the University of Passo Fundo (RS).

He graduated in Theology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná. He completed his academic training with a master’s degree and doctorate in Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome (1994-1996).

Odilo is a distant relative of the late Cardinal Dom Vicente Scherer, which may have been a significant influence on his decision to pursue religious life.

In 2013, the archbishop, who was 63 years old, was one of those considered to succeed Pope Benedict XVI.
