Anesthetist Walter José Roberto Borges suffered a heart attack while attending surgery in Pelotas, on the 20th. Since then, he has been in a vegetative state, according to family information.
Borges left the city of Linhares, in Espírito Santo, with a delegation of doctors and health professionals to work inside and outside hospitals to help victims of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul.
In addition to participating in surgeries, the doctor also worked on the streets in rescue and first aid in the city of Rio Grande do Sul. On social media, friends and family praise her always supportive attitude.
At fifty years old, Borges is the father of two children, aged 8 and 12, and is married to dentist Daianny Coimbra Ulhoa, with whom he lives in the Espírito Santo city of Vila Velha.
Graduated in 2000 from the Faculty of Medicine of Petrópolis, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Borges specializes in mental health and shares a private practice with his wife.
Daianny is in Pelotas monitoring her husband's medical situation and trying to transfer him to Espírito Santo. “We need to transport him to a hospital with neurological support conditions, but we are unable to provide private transport”, explains the wife.
The transfer is also important due to the proximity of the family during treatment, but the transfer depends on Borges' clinical stabilization and an arrangement between the state health departments of Espírito Santos and Rio Grande do Sul, as all care and hospitalization takes place through SUS.
What happened
According to reports from colleagues, Borges was taking part in surgery at the Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Pelotas (HE-UFPel) when he left the room because he was feeling unwell.
When he didn't return, his colleagues found him unconscious in a rest room at the hospital. According to HE-UFPel, after the “interruption” he was immediately attended to by the team and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Walter had a heart attack and spent more than 8 minutes without oxygen. Preliminary examinations diagnosed signs of brain damage.
