Civil police officer José Antônio Lourenço, killed on Monday (19) during an operation of the Special Resources Coordination (Core) in the City of God, West Zone of Rio, held the position of Undersecretary of Public Order of the state capital in 2022 and 2023.
He worked in the management of Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD), along with the current secretary of the portfolio, Brenno Carnevale. In an interview with CNN Carnevale lamented the agent’s death and highlighted his trajectory inside and outside the police.

Lourenço participated in a due diligence of the Consumer Police Station (Decon) in one of the target addresses of an operation that investigates the production and sale of ice contaminated with fecal coliforms, when he was shot by criminals. He was even rescued by colleagues and taken to Lourenço Jorge Municipal Hospital in Barra da Tijuca, but could not resist the injuries.
The operation was triggered after technical reports and complaints that pointed to the presence of fecal ice coliforms sold on Barra da Tijuca and Recreio beaches. In February this year, another action had already detected contamination, based on analyzes made by the State Water and Sewage Company (Cedae), which led to the deepening of investigations.
The task force participates teams from Decon, the Environment Police Station (DPMA), Cedae, the State Environmental Institute (INEA), the Superintendence to Combat Environmental Crimes (Supcca) and Core itself.
The agents meet search and seizure warrants in establishments involved in the manufacture and distribution of the product. Possible irregularities in the consumption of electricity are also determined, as well as environmental and consumer crimes.
The State Secretariat of Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro (Sepol) issued a note mourning the death of the agent.
“The loss of one of ours is felt with pain and indignation. SEPOL sympathizes with family, friends and colleagues at this time of mourning, also lived by each of the institution,” the statement says.
The folder also reported that steps are already underway to identify and capture those responsible for the attack.
