Jony Ive designer known for revolutionizing the products of Apple announced a new and ambitious project alongside Sam Altman, CEO of Open to develop an artificial intelligence hardware startup, the Io .
Ive was primarily responsible for the design of iconic products that marked generations, such as the iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch . For over two decades at Apple, he acted as Steve Jobs’s right -hand man and led a minimalist design philosophy that helped turn Apple into one of the world’s most valuable companies.
In 2019, he officially left the company to found Lovefrom, a design collective. Now, with an agreement valued at about $ 6.5 billion, according to reports by The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and other media vehicles, he joins OpenAi in a project still wrapped in mystery, but already drawing market attention.
According to Business Insider, the proposal is to create a device centered on artificial intelligence – something that goes beyond traditional smartphones and computers. The idea is to develop a new, more intuitive and user -centered interface that represents an evolutionary leap in the way we interact with technology.
The partnership between Ive and Altman, however, began two years ago. Ive founded the Io In 2024, bringing together a team of hardware and software experts. With the merger, this team will integrate OpenAi’s research and engineering teams in San Francisco, while Lovefrom assumes creative responsibilities.
Altman expressed enthusiasm for the project, describing him as “the most amazing technology play the world has ever seen,” while Ive pointed out that his 30-year trajectory prepared him for this moment of redefining interaction between humans and technology.

British, a graduate of industrial design, entered Apple in 1992 and gained prominence with Steve Jobs’ return in 1997. Together, they created a new minimalist, elegant and functional design language. Ive has led product design such as iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air and Apple Watch, making design one of Apple’s central pillars.
In 2015, Chief Design Officer was appointed, influenced not only Apple’s hardware and software, but also on architectural projects such as Apple Park. In 2019, he left Apple.
In 2024, he started a partnership with the Open and the softbank. The project foresees the creation of a new type of artificial intelligence device.
