Strictly symmetrical framing, a curated color palette and (a lot of) nostalgia in every scene – these are some signs that you’re probably in a Wes Anderson movie. The director’s language is so strong that people all over the world are creating videos with the Texan filmmaker’s style.
It all started when Ava Williams shared a video on TikTok inspired by Anderson on the 8th of April. Since then, the recording has been viewed more than 12 million times, creating a trend on social media.

Be it a day at the hotel pool, a holiday afternoon or a simple trip to the market, everything can be romanticized in this trend. On TikTok, the hashtag #wesandersontrend already exceeds 12 million views.

One of the videos is Keith Afadi’s lunch in a cafeteria in central London, filmed at angles similar to Anderson’s. And in Ukraine, Valeria Shashenok used the same format to draw attention to the destruction wrought by war in her country.

But after all, who is Wes Anderson?
Wes Anderson was born in Texas, United States, and is a filmmaker, producer, screenwriter and actor. He studied philosophy and, during college, he met actor Owen Wilson, with whom he made his first short film, called Bottle Rocket (1994).
The director was nominated three times for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars, for “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001), “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” (2014), the latter also earned him a nomination for Best Director. In addition, the filmmaker competed for Best Animation with “Fantastic Mr. Raposo” (2014).
Wes Anderson often works with top-notch actors and directs them in an original and quirky way, in almost theatrical tones.
Bill Murray, protagonist of “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou”, participated in eight films, and Owen Wilson in seven. Jason Schwartzman, Adrien Brody and Willem Dafoe are also recurring in Anderson’s productions.
In addition, the director relies on the collaboration of friends when writing the script. With peculiar and unusual dialogues, he still uses sequences of scenes to divide the narrative, remembering a theatrical structure.
Anderson also uses some similar framing and movement between films. One of these techniques is the traveling, in which the filmmaker accompanies the characters walking with the camera on a rail. This shooting style is present in “Journey to Darjeeling” (2017) and “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012).
His influence on fashion, architecture and interior decoration is so remarkable that it is not difficult to find a bar inspired by his films or a fashion film with your direction.
The French luxury brand Louis Vuitton, for example, created a concept bag inspired by the film “Journey to Darjeeling“ (2007), and Lacoste, Gucci and Bally made the film “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001) the main theme of their 2015 winter collections. And in 2016, the filmmaker directed a campaign for the H&M brand.
In addition, Bar Luce, at the Prada Foundation, in Milan, was signed by the filmmaker. Designed by Anderson, the Bar replicates the vintage atmospheres of the 1950s.
Wes Anderson’s new film, “Asteroid City”, is scheduled for release in August this year. And it features Tom Hanks, Maya Hawke and Margot Robbie in the cast.
