The World Health Organization’s monkeypox emergency committee will meet next Thursday to determine what measures to take against the current outbreak of the disease, the agency said today.
The committee will mainly decide on the seriousness of the resurgence of monkeypox cases, and whether to designate it a “public health emergency”, the agency’s highest level of alert.
It will meet for the second time, having ruled out raising the alert level at its previous meeting on June 23.
The number of confirmed cases in the world has risen sharply since then to surpass the 10,000 mark in more than 60 countries, with Europe the worst-hit region.
The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has repeatedly expressed his concern about the spread of the disease outside the countries where it is endemic and called on member countries to take appropriate measures to reduce infections.
