There have been more than 80 health attacks in Ukraine since the Russian invasion, according to World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“We are outraged by the continuing attacks on health services. Since the beginning of the invasion of the Russian Federation, there have been 82 attacks on health services, resulting in at least 72 deaths and 43 injuries, including patients and health workers,” he said at a press conference on Wednesday (30).
“Attacks on healthcare are a violation of international humanitarian law and must stop immediately.”
Dr. Mike Ryan, director of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Program, said there is a “world of difference” between issues of access to health during a conflict compared to conflict that actively targets health care.
“It’s a very big difference between this situation and a situation where access is being actively denied to a population, where cutting people off is part of the tactic. It’s part of the military strategy,” he said.
“These are not people caught in the fog of war. These are not people just caught up in conflict. It’s people being directly targeted, directly denied and used directly as strategic implements, like chess pieces on a horrible, murderous board that they don’t have the right to, or don’t need to have,” he said.
