Ukraine is facing a worsening health emergency as the conflict with Russia continues to rage, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said, with the UN agency’s concerns heightened by overworked health workers, increase in bombings and the prospect of the coming of winter.
According to the WHO, 434 attacks on health facilities have taken place in Ukraine, out of 615 such attacks reported so far this year worldwide.
WHO coordinator for Ukraine Heather Papovich said health teams in many areas are used to working with shells falling outside their windows.
Papovich, who visited Ukraine last week, said the WHO is most concerned about areas its teams cannot access because of fighting or Russian occupation, including the eastern Donbas region and Kherson in the south.
“The biggest issue is access, that’s what keeps us up at night,” Papovich said, citing problems in those areas in transporting medicine for people with chronic illnesses or dealing with physical and mental trauma.
Disease control is also a factor of concern. Ukraine has low vaccination coverage for measles and polio, and concerns have been raised about the risk of cholera outbreaks. No cholera outbreaks have been confirmed in the country so far, Papovich said.
WHO also works alongside national health systems to support the health of refugees who have taken refuge in neighboring countries. More than six million people have fled the fighting in Ukraine and as many have been internally displaced.
