WHO to rename coronavirus strains in Greek letters to avoid country discrimination

The World Health Organization has announced a new COVID-19 variant naming system. This is reported on the WHO website.

From now on, WHO will use Greek letters to refer to variants first discovered in countries such as the United Kingdom, South Africa, Brazil and India.

The British variant is designated Alpha, the South African variant is Beta, the Brazilian variant is Gamma, and the Indian variant is Delta.

The WHO said that this should make it easier to use names in the discussion, as well as remove country designations from the names of new variants of coronavirus, and thus prevent negative associations.

“No country should be stigmatized for discovering and reporting new options,” wrote Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO technical lead for COVID-19.

  • On May 27, it was reported that the social network Facebook will no longer delete posts claiming that the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus was artificially created.
