WHO: Two new deaths from monkeypox

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported two more monkeypox deaths since its last update on June 27, bringing the total number of deaths from the disease since the start of the year to three, and announced that the disease has spread to new areas.

The report also states that cases of monkeypox have been reported in 9 more countries, territories and territories.

Cases have increased by 77% since the last report to 6,027, the WHO noted, with the majority occurring in the European region.

However, all three deaths occurred in Africa, according to the report.

The updated data also shows that more than 99% of the cases for which there is information on the gender of the patients have been recorded among men.

“The outbreak continues to primarily affect men who have sex with men and have reported having recently had sex with one or multiple partners, with no current transmission beyond these networks,” the report said.

The Geneva-based UN agency will convene a new meeting of the committee, which will recommend declaring the outbreak a “health emergency of global concern” — the WHO’s highest alert level — during the week of July 18. or even earlier, as its general manager announced yesterday.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is also due to meet with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez today, a WHO spokesman confirmed without giving further details.

According to WHO data, Spain has so far recorded 802 cases.
