WHO: Urgent approval for Indian coronavirus Covovax vaccine

The World Health Organization (WHO) today approved the Indian vaccine against COVID-19 Covovax, the agency said in a statement.

This vaccine “is produced by the Serum Institute of India under license from Novavax and is part of the portfolio of Covax (Covid International Vaccine Distribution System), which will enhance efforts to vaccinate more people in low income “, underlined the WHO.

“Vaccines remain one of the most effective methods of protection against severe forms and deaths caused by SARS-COV-2, despite the emergence of new variants,” said Dr. Mariangela Simaou, WHO for access to medicines.

“This approval is expected to facilitate access to vaccines for poor countries, 41 of which are still unable to vaccinate 10% of their population, while 98% of countries have not yet reached 40%,” he said. as the WHO has targeted the vaccination of 40% of the population of all countries by the end of the year.

This vaccine requires two doses and can be stored at temperatures of 2 to 8 degrees, as in commercial refrigerators.
