The singer and songwriter Antonio Barros died on Sunday morning (6), in João Pessoa, at the age of 95. He was buried at Parkinson’s Parkason Parque das Park Cemetery.
Alongside his wife Mary Maciel Ribeiro, better known as Cecéu, Barros composed more than 700 songs, including many immortalized hits in the voices of great interpreters of Brazilian music such as “is prohibited nap”, “Man with H”, “hits heart” and “looking for you”. In 2021, the couple’s work was declared Intangible Heritage of Paraíba.
Born in the city of Queimadas, Youth, Antonio Barros played tambourine on radio stations, when he became friends with Jackson do Pandeiro and began composing songs and recording with him and other musicians such as Luiz Gonzaga and Genival Lacerda. The relationship with Cecéu began in the 70’s and they continued as a couple and as musical partners to this day.
According to the Central Office of Collection and Distribution (Ecad), Antonio Barros left 335 musical works and 221 recordings registered in his name.
One of the greatest interpreters of her songs, singer Elba Ramalho thanked the “countless forrós” she sang and were composed of by him. “Brazilian music loses a lot on the day today. There was our forró master, Antonio Barros .. Strong man, consistent and true work when portraying our customs, rhythms and our northeastern way to be and live!” He wrote in an Instagram post.
