Mattia Debertolis, Trentino, died in the night between 11 and 12 August 2025 at the Chengdu hospital, in China, after feeling badly during the Middle race of the World Games of Easternizing, Running under extreme heat, with peaks of 43 degrees.
Graduated in Civil Engineering, Mattia Debertolis had chosen to continue his studies abroad, moving to Stockholm for a doctorate of research at the University of the Swedish capital. In the Scandinavian city he had also found a new sporting point of reference, Entering the IFK Lidingö Sok, one of the best -known companies in Nordic orientating. In Italy he continued to defend the colors of the Park World Tour Italy, where he was one of the three captains.
With the Italian national team jersey he had taken part in World Championships and World Cup competitions, collecting important placements. Among these, the fifth place in the relay in the 2022 Cup final. In the same year he had conquered the Italian title both on the long journey and in the Middle test, goals that he had already reached in the past.
Since he was a boy he alternated the orienteering to other disciplines, such as cross -country skiing and football. However, the passion for the map and the compass led him to devote himself entirely to this discipline, with which, in 2017, he conquered two golds in Turkey at the Mediterranean Championships under 21, both in the sprint and in the long journey.
In the hours following the news, numerous messages of closeness to the family arrived. The President of the Autonomous Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, wrote: “His passion, talent and commitment with which he represented our territory and Italy will remain an example for many young people. To his mother Erica, to his brother Nicolò, to the family members, to teammates and the whole Italian sports family I express, together with the junta, the most heartfelt condolences and the proximity of the entire Trentino community ».
