The pianist, conductor and composer from Pernambuco Marlos Nobre He died at the age of 85 last Monday night (2). The maestro’s family chose not to disclose the cause of death. He leaves a widow and a daughter.
Marlos began his musical studies in Recife, at the age of 5, at the Conservatório Pernambucano de Música. Noble was the first Brazilian to conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, in 1990 .
He was also conductor of several other orchestras: Orchester Philharmonique de l’ORTF in Paris ; l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande ; l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Nice in France; Orchestra Colón Theater Philharmonic in Buenos Aires ; Symphony Orchestra in Mexico ; Cuban Symphony Orchestra . He was a visiting professor at Yale University from the Juilliard School from the University of Texas and the institution of Indiana.
His works are published by publishers Max Eschig (Paris), Boosey & Hawkes (England) and Marlos Nobre Edition (Rio de Janeiro).
Nobre directed the National Institute of Music of the National Arts Foundation (Funarte), in 1976. He chaired the International Music Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), in Paris, between 1985 and 1987 In 1988, he began directing the Brasília Cultural Foundation. Occupies chair number 1 at the Brazilian Academy of Music and is musical director and principal conductor of Recife Symphony Orchestra .
In 2005, he unanimously received the Tomás Luís de Victoria Award from the Sociedad de Derechos de Autor (SGAE), in Madrid, Spain, awarded unanimously for the first time in its history. At the award ceremony, the book Marlos Nobre: El sonido del realismomagico, by Tomás Marco, published by Fundación Autor de Madrid, was launched in Spain.
In a statement, Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) said that Marlos, who was once employed by Rádio MEC, a broadcaster linked to the system, “will always be remembered for his genius and contribution to art”. As a radio producer at the company, he presented the programs Linguagem da Música and Tribuna de Compositores.
“Empresa Brasil de Comunicação expresses its feelings and sympathizes with the family, colleagues and friends of Marlos Nobre”, says the EBC statement.
The maestro’s widow, Maria Luiza Nobre, said that the legacy he leaves behind is that of being the greatest Ibero-American composer, according to The New York Times.
“His legacy was to create the Espiral Project at Funarte with the children of employees during the military regime. He was arrested twice and, even so, he returned to work on the project. His great glory was meeting several boys from the Spiral Project in New York doing their doctorates at the Juilliard School. A great legacy is being played by the greatest orchestras in the world. He was considered a true genius and wanted the best for Brazil in terms of culture,” said the widow.
