Capoeira teacher Eduardo de Souza, 42, killed at dawn on Sunday (2) in Mauá, in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, was a scholar and defender of Afro-Brazilian culture, according to his friends.
Also known as Professor Toli, Souza taught capoeira classes at Dante Alighieri College, one of the capital’s most traditional private schools and taught crafts for children from other schools. “It took many boys from the bad way,” said capoeira master Fernando Santos Ramos, who was a teacher of Eduardo.
According to the São Paulo Public Security Bureau (SSP-SP), Eduardo had his motorcycle stolen and was injured with a shot at dawn on Sunday in Mauá.
The Military Police found him unconscious at the scene of the theft, triggered the help, but he could not resist. The stolen motorcycle was set on fire at Jardim Alzira Franco, in Santo André. Police seek the perpetrators of the murder.
According to Ramos, Professor Eduardo was a great capoeirista and began his career in his capoeira group at Armageddon school. “He made a career with me, here in Mauá. Eduardo’s funeral and burial at the Vale dos Pinheirais cemetery in Mauá gathered more than one hundred people, including dozens of capoeiristas. “We made a tribute to him by playing atabaques. It was a great loss for capoeira, because he did a great job, teaching children how to do atabaques with PVC pipes. Many boys got off the bad way and went to a better path to his hands, ”said Ramos.
