WHO will dispense thousands of doses of HIV drugs in Ukraine

THE World Health Organisation (WHO) announced yesterday that it will distribute thousands of doses of antiretroviral drugs to Ukraine to meet the needs of HIV carriers in the country, for the next twelve months.

The WHO, together with the US President’s AIDS Emergency Plan (PEPFAR), has procured 209,000 packages of the generic antiretroviral drug TLD with the Ukrainian authorities and other partners.

Estimates indicate that in Ukraine There are 260,000 people living with HIV, the virus that causes it AIDS. It is the second largest number of HIV patients in Europe after Russia, while before the Russian invasion about 50% of them were receiving antiretroviral treatment.

Last month, the UN Office on HIV / AIDS warned that Ukraine’s stockpile of HIV drugs was sufficient to cover needs for less than a month.

“This war has the potential to undermine the progress that has been made with great difficulty in recent years on a number of health issues, including HIV. “We can not allow this to happen when Ukraine has started to make a significant turn,” said Hans Henry Klugge, WHO Regional Director for Europe.

The first batch of anti-HIV drugs crossed the Polish border into Ukraine and is expected to be transported to the competent health stations across the country, according to the WHO.
