“Whoever is in charge is the one who pays”: scholarship students denounce discrimination suffered by colleagues at PUC-SP

“Whoever is in charge is the one who pays, is grateful for the opportunity and stays calm”, wrote a student at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP) to a fellow university scholarship holder.

The phrase was published in response to a comment on a social media page amid discussion about the installation of turnstiles at the gates of the campus, located in Perdizes, a neighborhood in the west of São Paulo.

Other discriminatory phrases were addressed to scholarship students in the same post. “Don’t forget that someone pays for you to study at PUC”, said another student.

“You're angry because you're tough, it's not my fault”, says another comment.

The insults continued to be published by other colleagues. “I’m not paying 4,500 reais to take classes with a homeless person”, said one paying student.

The comments mentioned above are some examples of phrases left in a post on the “Spotted PUC SP” page. The profile has existed for over ten years with the aim of promoting meetings between university students, who express interest in their colleagues anonymously.

Recently, the page started publishing other types of content about academic routine.

The publication that generated an attack on scholarship students contained a thank you from the page's administrators to Fundação São Paulo, the supporting entity of PUC-SP.

After “Spotted PUC SP” reported some cases of theft on campus, the institution announced, last month, that it is considering installing turnstiles at the entrances to the unit. Despite being a private university, PUC-SP has, until now, kept its gates open to the community.

The measure divided the opinions of students, teachers and staff, generating debates on campus, in private groups and on social media.
