Who’s who in the trial of Alec Baldwin for the death on the set of the movie “Rust”

Nineteen months after the first charges against actor Alec Baldwin for the death of “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, the case reaches a climax this week as the actor faces a manslaughter trial in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Find out who’s who in this case:

Halyna Hutchins

The Ukrainian-born cinematographer grew up on a Soviet naval base, watched Russian films and dreamed of making a documentary about nuclear submarines. Known for her passion, creativity and leadership on more than 30 productions, Hutchins was named one of the American Society of Cinematographers’ 2019 Rising Stars in Los Angeles.

She was struck less than five feet away by a .45-caliber bullet fired from Baldwin’s gun as they adjusted the camera angle on the New Mexico set. She leaves behind her husband Matt Hutchins, son Andros, and her parents and sister in Kiev.

Alec Baldwin

The son of a high school shooting coach, Alec Baldwin prides himself on his knowledge of guns and his ability to handle them safely. Those skills will be put to the test when a jury considers Baldwin’s argument that he did not pull the trigger on the revolver that fired the fatal shot.

Responding to the statement on Fox News, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, a defense witness, said that “guns don’t just go off.” Baldwin’s statement also prompted prosecutors to file charges.

Hannah Gutierrez

The 24-year-old gunsmith, who was 24 at the time of the shooting, was convicted of manslaughter in March for carrying the live ammunition that killed Hutchins. Live ammunition is banned on film sets, and prosecutors accused Gutierrez of inadvertently bringing six .45-caliber Colt rounds to the production and mixing them with the dummy bullets, a charge she denied. At trial, her attorney unsuccessfully tried to blame Baldwin’s crew’s haste during filming, as well as “off-script” use of weapons, for violating firearm safety protocol.

Dave Halls

The veteran first assistant director is the only person in the case to accept a plea deal from prosecutors. Halls, a witness in Baldwin’s trial, has sided with the actor and taken the blame for failing to check the magazines in his gun.
