Why China was unaffected by the digital blackout and ‘blue screens’

While hundreds of thousands of companies in the US and Europe last Friday faced an unprecedented disruption of their operating systems, affecting airports, hotels and hospitals worldwide, China was largely unaffected. The problem was caused by a software update for Windows devices from Texas-based cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, which generates more than half of its revenue from the United States. Flights and hospital appointments were cancelled, payroll systems crashed and TV channels went black after a botched software upgrade hit Microsoft’s operating system. The latest version of the Falcon Sensor software is supposed to make CrowdStrike customers’ systems more secure by shielding them against would-be hackers by updating the threats it protects against.
