Why the watermelon became a symbol of the Palestinian resistance

Pro-Palestinian social media posts are increasingly accompanied by a watermelon icon, prompting many to question this trend. The answer lies in the content moderation policies that social media platforms have in place, but also in a long history of bans. Many users complain that the algorithms indiscriminately block pro-Palestinian content related to the Israel-Hamas war. For example, it is enough for the post to be accompanied by an emoji of the Palestinian flag to be cut off and even labeled as “terrorist content”. Reacting to these checks, social media users, especially on major platforms, in their posts who want to express their solidarity with the Palestinians, started to replace the Palestinian flag, but also the words “Palestine” and “Gaza”, with watermelon icon.
