In a post-apocalyptic setting, after a virus turned people into cannibalistic zombies, the world collapsed and was partially destroyed and abandoned.

Obviously, this is fiction, but it is inevitable not to remember what the whole world experienced three years ago – especially in the first minutes of the first two episodes. A lethal virus, of which little is known and there is no medicine or vaccine to cure it.

The plot begins with the first day of the outbreak following Joel’s family and, throughout the episodes, it expands, bringing records of the consequences, spanning several years – explaining the situation better.

Living in a different reality for the last 20 years, Joel embarks on an adventure – while fighting for survival – when he has to take a 14-year-old girl to a safe place where she can be examined.

It is believed that Ellie has in her DNA what is needed for “the cure”, as her body does not react to the virus.

With the demise of the social structure, the real villain is actually those who are left and fight to protect the quarantine area itself, creating armies and extremist rules.

What, at first, appears to be a series of violence and killings, unfolds, in fact, in the construction of a sensitive and natural relationship between the protagonists and in a journey to a complex and frightening reality.

Bringing in itself the plot of the video game, which is intense action, the series, in turn, manages to balance adventure and drama.

Despite the protagonists being Joel and Ellie, the production works as an anthology series, addressing other stories as well.

With episodes with completely different montages and climaxes, the series gets more and more interesting, providing information and clarifying the viewer’s doubts little by little.

The series doesn’t care about the time to explain what it wants, considering the complexity of the universe at hand: the first episode has 1h21min and the following an average of 50min.

Immediate success?

“The Last of Us” is the most awarded video game in history and has a worldwide fan base, but it looks like the series won’t be far behind.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the main review aggregator on the internet, the series has a 97% approval rating from expert critics.
