Why we should all see Mare Fuori 2

It is curious enough that in 2021, together with the protests of those who complain about the fact that in Italy there are no unmissable and exportable TV series, a unconscious prejudice towards products made by Rai. The same Rai that in recent years has given us writing masterpieces such as The brilliant friend e I wanted to be a rock star showing us that quality is not only found on paid platforms, but also on free ones which, as such, often end up on the sly, forgotten in dark ravines precisely because they are within everyone’s reach and, therefore, less à la page. Sea Out, the series co-produced by Rai Fiction and Picomedia, written by Cristiana Farina and Maurizio Careddu and directed by Milena Cocozza and Ivan Silvestrini, is part of this trend, and it is a pity that most of the public who on social media writes that in Italy always the same things and there is no room for young people, you have not noticed.

The second season, match on Rai2 Wednesday 17 November and available on that inexhaustible resource of content that is Rai Play, it picks up where the first one left off, telling the reality of juvenile prison in all its facets, from the fear of getting into a shower for fear of not going out with one’s own legs at the bloody gang war; from tears strangled inside the pillow so as not to show others the slightest sign of weakness to the hope that shines in the eyes of those who dream of a better future. Sea Out does not discount anyone and, thanks to a strong and vibrant language and a quadrille of very successful characters, from boys forced to live together in detention to adults who try to guide them trusting that they can straighten their lives before it’s too late, gets straight to the point, immersing ourselves in a microcosm, that of the Nisida prison, overlooking the Naples seafront, that teems with afrosted humanity, animated by the most sinister bullying and the purest love.

Sea Out 2

The parable of Carmine, the boy who tries to escape the fate of a family entangled with all their shoes in the underworld; the naivety of the Chiattillo, who strives to understand how things work before being overwhelmed by the law of the strongest, and the perseverance of Naditza, who knows what she wants, but who also risks being harnessed by the very strict rules of the gypsy community, offer a complete picture that cannot fail to conquer a range of transversal viewers, ranging from the younger boys who crowd social networks with enthusiastic comments to adults who are thrilled to understand how it will end. Together with the most experienced actors, including a great one Carolina Crescentini in the role of the director and Carmine Recano in that of the commander with an ear turned to the boys, to make her figure is above all a cast of talented young talents, including Nicolas Maupas, Valentina Romani, Massimiliano Caiazzo, Artem, Matteo Paolillo (who also sings the song O’ Mar For, composed by Stefano Lentini, author of the soundtrack of the series), Ludovica Coscione, Greta Esposito and Giacomo Giorgio (which we hope will appear in more and more flashbacks because a Sea Out without Ciro it’s a bit like Lady Gaga without the heel 15). See it and show it: nevertheless, when an American wonders if we make good series in Italy, we do not pull out of the hat some title that this adjective really deserves.
