“Wicked” has the best debut for a Broadway musical adaptation

The long-awaited adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked” It opened in theaters around the world over the weekend and made history by having the highest-grossing release of its kind in history.

Only in the United States, the film John M. Chu (“Podres de Ricos”) raised US$114 million (around R$660 million). In the international market, the result was US$164.2 million (around US$950 million). Adding, then, US$278.2 million (about 1.6 billion).

The production surpassed titles such as “Chicago” (2002), “Mamma Mia” (2008) and “Les Miserables” (2012), which held the record for the best opening of a Broadway adaptation globally (US$103 million – around R$600 million).

“Wicked” is a prelude to the classic “The Wizard of Oz” and follows the story of Elphaba a young woman who, because she has green skin, is misunderstood and still does not know her true power, and of Glinda a popular and ambitious woman who has not yet discovered her true identity.

The film stars Cynthia Erivo (“Harriet” and “The Outsider”) and Ariana Grande (“Brilhante Victória” and “Sam & Cat”). Names like Jonathan Bailey (“Bridgerton“), Jeff Goldblum (“Jurassic Park”) and the Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere at the Same Time”).
