Will Orban expel Hungary from the EU?

Today, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban referred for the first time to the possibility of his country leaving the European Union, which he accused of intolerance, claiming that he was waging “a holy war, a jihad”.

“Speaking to supporters of his party in Budapest earlier in the day, Mr Orban hinted at the possibility of Hungary leaving the EU. “Otherwise, he will ask the EU for” tolerance “for his country.” Otherwise, it will not be possible for us to continue on a common path, “he said.

Victor Orban attacked the EU a few days before the ruling of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg on the new mechanism of the rule of law of the European Union. The regulation stipulates that countries that violate the rule of law can see their EU budget resources cut. Hungary and Poland have appealed against the mechanism, which was decided in December 2020, and the European Court of Justice has announced that it will issue its decision next Wednesday.

EU authorities and human rights groups have long accused Victor Orban of undermining democracy and the rule of law. “For them, the rule of law is the only means by which they want to ferment us into something that looks like them,” Orban said, adding that Hungary does not want to be like Western Europe, as it does the West to adopt the Hungarian asylum or family policy. “Hungary wants to keep the EU united despite growing cultural alienation. That is why Budapest has repeatedly offered tolerance in Brussels and Berlin. There is no other solution but tolerance. Only then can we find a common path,” he said. The Hungarian Prime Minister at the beginning of his pre-election campaign tonight, for the elections of April 3, in which for the first time he is facing considerable competition, as the opposition from all the political spectrum is united against him.
