Will Smith, from “Slow Horses”, jokes about Oscar controversy: “I came in peace”

The producer and screenwriter Will Smith best known for his work on the series “Slow Horses” made a joke about the controversy surrounding his namesake, actor Will Smith, at the 2022 Oscars, when he went on stage to receive an Emmy on Sunday night (15).

Will Smith (the producer) came out on top in the category of Best Writing for a Drama Series. When he began his acceptance speech, he quoted the “I Am Legend” actor: “Despite my name, I come in peace.”

The producer’s comment refers to one of the biggest controversies in Oscar history. In 2022, Will Smith won his first Oscar for “Best Actor” for “King Richard: Creating Champions” – a fact that few remember after the actor slapped Chris Rock in the face.

It all happened when comedian Chris Rock, who was presenting the “Best Documentary” category, made a comment about the shaved head of Jada Pinkett Smith, at the time Will Smith’s wife, who suffers from alopecia, a disease that causes hair loss. The actor was irritated by the situation and, when it was his turn to go on stage, he took the opportunity to “fight back”.

THE 76th Emmy Awards the most prestigious award in American television, takes place this Sunday night (15), at the Peacock Theater, in Los Angeles, United States. See the full list of award winners.
