After slapping Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars, Will Smith lost popularity among Americans. This is what a survey of the Q Scores – platform known for showing the power and reach of celebrities – for “Variety” magazine.
According to the data, Smith’s rating was “significantly impacted” by the slap on Rock during the film awards ceremony, broadcast live on TV.
Before taking the stage to accept the award for best actor for his role in “King Richard”, Will Smith took offense at a joke made by presenter Chris Rock, about the hair of Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia.
The Q Scores survey is conducted twice a year of nearly 1,800 US consumers and shows their perceptions and feelings about celebrities.
Will Smith, who has always been among the highest rated over the past few years, dropped his score from 39 to 24 – the number indicates the percentage of respondents who considered the actor as one of their favorite personalities.
Q Score’s executive vice president, Hnery Schafer, told Variety that the drop shows a “very significant and precipitous decline” for Will in the rankings.
Will Smith’s wife Jada was also affected, with her positive score dropping from 13 to six.
At the end of July, the actor posted a video apologizing for his behavior, saying it was “unacceptable” what he did.
“I was confused at the time. Everything is confused. I contacted Chris and the message I got is that he is not ready to speak. When he is, he will contact me. So I’m going to tell you, Chris, that I apologize. My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here when you’re ready to speak,” says Smith.
He had already done the same the day after the Oscars and even resigned from his position as a member of the Academy. Weeks later, it was Oscar’s turn to ban him for a decade.
Also according to the survey, the decline in popularity of Will Smith was more pronounced among women and non-black respondents.
In July, the magazine “Variety” released another ranking, this time about the highest paid artists in Hollywood in 2022. Will Smith appears in second place, behind only Tom Cruise (R$ 100 million): this year, the actor will receive $35 million to star in a fugitive slave thriller, “Emancipation.”
