William and Kate Middleton, a fairy tale born (also) thanks to a nickname

To do spark the spark between the prince William And Kate Middleton now almost 21 years ago, contributed a nickname that the future Duchess of Cambridge had earned in her university days: “Beautiful Kate“. A detail revealed by the royal author Katie Nicholl in his book Kate: The Future Queen. It was 2001, and Middleton had enrolled at the prestigious St Andrew’s University in Scotland to study art history (but above all to meet William, as gossip claims). At the university she immediately got noticed for her natural charm, so much so that her classmates nicknamed her, in fact, “Beautiful Kate”. “Initially she was more reserved than many other college girls, but hers natural beauty it didn’t go unnoticed, ”Nicholl explained. “Tanned from a recent Barbados vacation with her parents, fit after a morning run or swim, and dressed in her comfy jeans, skinny sweater and cowboy boots, radiated outward freshness and inward security“.

William, at the time one of the most desired young bachelors on the planet, arrived at the university to start his studies just a week after Middleton. And it didn’t take him long for the girl’s nickname to come to his ear. A nickname that piqued his curiosity: he wanted to see “Beautiful Kate”, who among other things lived right in the apartment below hers. And when he saw that beautiful brunette, soap and water, he was immediately impressed, so much so that one morning, as Nicholl tells us, he took courage and asked “Beautiful Kate” to join him and his friends for breakfast. A sort of first date that was upset by a funny incident revealed by royal author Tom Quinn: “The prince was so excited to meet Kate who, as she walked towards her, stumbled and he said: “Oh, that’s a terrible start, now you’re going to think I’m a complete wimp“.

After that first unlikely approach, the two began dating, sharing moments of relaxation outside of class and study hours. Of course, at the beginning there was no lack of others moments of embarrassment. In his book William and Kate: A Royal Love StoryChristopher Anderson, for example, said that during a party in the classrooms of St Andrews University Kate, seeing the prince he came over and nodded a curtsy. William returned the courtesy but, evidently again in the throes of emotion, he spilled his drink on himself. And Kate, not knowing how to behave, disappeared. The Duchess of Cambridge herself recalled that episode on the occasion of her engagement with William of her in 2010, revealing: “I went very red when I saw you“.

Those moments of mutual embarrassment already revealed the great interest felt at the time by both. The rest is history. On April 29, the crowned couple – one of the most united and envied in the world – will celebrate the eleventh Wedding anniversarysurrounded by the three splendid children: George, Charlotte And Louis. Like in a fairytale, born (also) thanks to an intriguing nickname and a slightly clumsy breakfast.
