William and Kate Middleton against the war: “We are with the Ukrainian people”

The rules of the royal protocol are clear: any interference with politics is prohibited for members of the British royal family. William and Kate welcomed Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olenareplacing Queen Elizabeth still at Windsor Castle after lockdown, in the Throne Room at Buckingham Palace. And it was a very meeting cordial: both couples appeared in a good mood while respecting social distancing.

Not even a year and a half later Zelensky and his people find themselves facing each other the invasion of Vladimir Putin. The Cambridge until now had never spoken openly about politics. But a couple of modern royals must do this too: express solidarity and show humanity, if the situation requires it. William and Kate, faced with people who are experiencing moments of anguish and terror, have chosen to break the protocol to take sides against the war. And theirs is a very important public message, because it brand without ambiguity the distance of the Crown from Putin’s invasion.

The words of the Cambridge are here to those of Harry and Meghan Markle: “We stand with the people of Ukraine”, wrote the Sussexes in a message – disseminated through the Archewell Foundation website – in which they take sides against the “breaking of international and humanitarian laws”, encouraging “the global community and its leaders to do the same”. William and Harry are now divided over everything. But in condemning the war in Ukraine they found themselves united.
