“THEY DON’T RENT US A HOUSE BECAUSE I’M GAY”. On Instragram it is written like this, in capital letters. The post is on the pages of Michael Ceglia and William Picciau, a couple since 2017, who was looking for a house in Milan these days and for them that house does not exist. The complaint is all on social media. «This is what is happening today 30/June 2023 in Milan. After an exhausting search, we finally find it! Our perfect home. We make the proposal, we don’t negotiate. We wait for an email for days. A call from the agent saying about the owners who seemed enthusiastic. Days go by and then the final call. We are not good… we are GAY».

The tale of the two men is reported by Republic And Corriere della Sera, who interviews the couple: «We had seen a two-room apartment in the Washington area. With the broker of the real estate agency, who in the end was as shocked as we were, we were satisfied that our financial situation was in line with what the owners requested. He himself was very optimistic, we expected everything to go well, we thought it was just a formality to wait a few days».
Instead it wasn’t like that. Michael Ceglia explains it to the newspaper: «The agency called my mother, who was the first to contact her, communicating that the owners did not want to accept our proposal for the house because we were a homosexual couple, even though we were the only ones who accepted their economic request of 1,500 euros per month plus expenses. My mother called me in tears and soon after I received a similar call from my sister, shocked by this discrimination.
«We felt wrong and decided to tell our story to show how far there is still to go in terms of rights. We both work, we are two entrepreneurs and we have a beauty salon in Milan. We work and pay taxes like everyone else and we would like to be recognized the same rights as others. We live in a secular state and we expect the law to protect us too against discrimination of this kind, we don’t want to be second-class citizens. Anyone’s sexual orientation should be a personal matter and not have a negative impact on public life of everyday”.
