The mismatch between the presidents of Brazil and Ukraine, respectively Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Volodymyr Zelensky, in the G7 was the mismatch between two visions of the world.
Zelensky has become an international hero for defending his country, brutally attacked by a superior adversary who denies Ukraine’s right to exist.
Lula places the aggressor and the attacked as two almost equal sides in a war of conquest that started without provocation, although he recognizes that the territorial integrity of Ukraine must be respected.
Ukraine’s war has created a unity within the G7 the likes of which has not been seen in decades and a willingness to impose a massive price on the aggressor, Russia.
Lula thinks that rich countries have failed in this context. And what is this context? It is the attempt to turn the liberal international order upside down via war in Ukraine, but not only: to turn the international order upside down through an autocratic axis centered on China and Russia.
In this sense, Lula’s statement about the president of the United States, Joe Biden, whose speech, according to him, would not be helping, is particularly disastrous.
Biden’s speech is simply to reiterate what is in the Charter of the United Nations (UN), which is respect for the territorial integrity of countries and the renunciation of force in international relations.
It is the nature of this conflict that Lula did not understand. It is what is implicit in the destruction of the international order that Lula did not understand. It is what really gives stature to international leaders, which Lula did not understand.
