Wind knocks down pedestal and hits Chilean tourist in Christ the Redeemer (RJ)

One Chilean tourist was hit on the morning of Thursday (17), by a pedestal During preparations for a Mass at the Christ the Redeemer Sanctuary, located at the top of Corcovado, in Rio de Janeiro.

The incident occurred while the Sanctuary team prepared for the daily religious celebration, held on the Plateau at the feet of the monument.

According to the sanctuary, the pedestal was overthrown by a gust of wind and ended up reaching the tourist . The victim was attended by local employees and then received first aid at the health post installed in the area. After being medicated, she was released in good condition and accompanied by her mother.

The object involved in the accident is a light pedestal, made of carbon fiber – a recycled material – approximately 1.5 meters high, 30 centimeters wide and 35 centimeters deep. It is used as a support for the image of Our Lady Aparecida, patron saint of Brazil, during the ceremonies.

In a statement, the administration of the Sanctuary reaffirmed that masses and celebrations are held daily at the scene, following strict security protocols. The note also points out that the sanctuary team is always prepared to provide assistance to faithful and visitors, even mentioning a recent case in which the service was provided to a tourist who suffered a sudden illness.

The Christ Redeemer Sanctuary is considered sacred soil and is an important pilgrimage point for tourists from around the world. Also according to the Administration, the site remains available to the competent authorities for any clarifications and is committed to offering a safe and welcoming environment to all who visit the monument.
