Microsoft today released an update to the Windows 10 operating system that brings visual changes to File Explorer.

The changes are included in a new test build for members of the Windows Insiders program. The update uses new icons for the Trash, Documents, Desktop, Downloads, and Pictures folders.

The icons in “Explorer” have changed very noticeably and it is striking. The icons are made in the Fluent design, which replaces the old Modern. In addition to the icons, Explorer will have other visual changes – increased spacing between elements, compact mode, and some other innovations that make Explorer more convenient for touch control.

As a reminder, Microsoft is currently preparing a major user interface and design update, codenamed Sun Valley, and will be part of the Windows 10 Cobalt or 21H2 release. For ordinary users, this version of the OS will be available in the fall of 2021, most likely in October.
