Windows 10’s next major update won’t be that big, but it will come out earlier

The last major Windows 10 update came out in the spring of 2020, but the autumn one did not contain any completely new features – it basically fixed bugs. According to the source, the next OS update will not be major – in the autumn update of Windows 10 this year, the company will again focus on fixing errors.

In general, rumors that Microsoft is not keeping pace with the redesign of Windows 10 have been around for a long time. Allegedly, this, as well as the release of Windows 10X for laptops, is the reason for the delay in major changes to Windows 10. And now, in fact, confirmation of this has appeared.

After installing the January 2021 cumulative update KB4598291, which is still available only in the Windows Insider channel, an element called Microsoft-Windows-21H1Enablement-Package ~ 31bf3856ad364e35 ~ amd64 ~~ 0.0.0.0 was found in the registry. The name (Enablement Package) means that the 21H1 update, that is, the spring update that everyone is waiting for, will be installed as the previous October update: all components will be preloaded on the PC in the background, and when the formal start is given installation, it is automatically and installed, without any requests from the operating system to download the update separately – as is usually done with major updates. The size of such Enablement Packages is small (since they do not contain new functions and capabilities), therefore, there is no need to notify the user about his release and innovations – everything will be installed automatically, and in fact there will be no innovations.

Since the spring update will not be major, there are suggestions that this year it may come out earlier than usual (May). Probably in April (or even March) Microsoft is activating the 21H1 Enablement Package install button on user computers.
