Windows 11 brings back a feature from Windows 95. File Explorer is finally usable

In early February, Microsoft announced that insider builds of Windows 11 would test features that may never end up in a stable system – previously, developers were only allowed to test those innovations that had already been decided to be implemented. One such experimental feature with an uncertain future is the creation of tabs in File Explorer. @WithinRafael noticed this.

It is noteworthy that the tabs in the file manager were tested in the first builds of Windows 95 (here’s what they looked like). Later, Microsoft abandoned them and still has not implemented them, despite the fact that users have repeatedly asked for it over the years and even created third-party analogues of Explorer with the main feature in the form of tabs.

Now, Microsoft seems to have finally heard the requests of users. Although the final decision on the introduction of tabs in the “Explorer” has not yet been made (the developers did not announce this on their blog), it’s safe to assume that the corporation does not want to upset enthusiastic fans. In any case, it is unlikely that an additional optional option will interfere.
