Windows 11 severely slows down some NVMe SSDs

Windows 11 has problems again. This time around, there have been numerous complaints about the low performance of NVMe SSDs that use this operating system. Discussions about this issue can be found on several threads on Reddit, as well as on the Microsoft support forums. In fact, such messages first appeared a few months ago, when Windows 11 was still in preview, but users continue to complain to this day.

According to reports, when testing drives in CrystalDiskMark, AS-SSD and other popular benchmarks, NVMe performance in Windows 11 was several times lower than in other versions of the system. The problem manifests itself in the random write test, while the results of most other tests do not change significantly. For example, here are the test results for the same SSD running Windows 10 and Windows 11:

The source of the problem has not been identified, but there are some suggestions. Users initially complained about the Virtualization-Based Security (VBS) component, which is virtualization-based security that can lead to a drop in SSD performance, but there is no significant difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Another theory suggests that the problem is related to which drive Windows 11 is installed on. If on an optional drive, then the results will match the stated SSD values. The images below, provided by one user, show how significant the difference can be when testing two identical drives on the same computer.

The latest Windows 11 update (build 22000.348) slightly improved SSD performance, although it is still far from the performance in Windows 10. It is noteworthy that three months ago, a Microsoft employee acknowledged the problem when Windows 11 was still in development, but for some reason still not resolved.
