Technical support for this operating system was completed by Microsoft in January 2020. As we can see, despite the lack of new features, risks and security threats, users are in no hurry to abandon this OS.

As Kaspersky Lab experts note, an outdated version of the operating system may work fine, but if it is no longer supported, it is easier to attack. When the system’s life cycle ends, vulnerabilities remain unpatched, patches are not released for them, which makes it easier for attackers to access data.

The share of those who use Windows 7 among home users is 37%, and among small and medium-sized businesses – 34%, microbusiness representatives – 35%.

There are also users and companies using even older versions of Windows, such as XP and Vista, which ended support in 2014 and 2017, respectively. But there are few of them – less than 1%. More than half (56%) use Windows 10, the latest and most secure version of the operating system.

For corporate users, Microsoft offers paid extended support for Windows 7. They can receive security updates through the Windows 7 ESU (Extended Security Updates) program until January 2023. In 2021, the price of this service has risen to $ 50 per computer, and in 2022 it will rise to $ 100 per computer.

According to statistics from Statcounter, as of April 2021, the share of Windows 7 still reaches 16.3% among desktop versions of Windows in the world.
