Wines from the São Francisco Valley receive a geographical indication seal

Wines produced in the São Francisco Valley will now have a certification of origin. With this recognition, wines and sparkling wines are now registered with a Geographical Indication (GI), a kind of seal that guarantees the quality of the region’s products.

The indication record was published in the magazine of the National Institute of Industrial Property (Inpi) on Tuesday (1st). The geographical origin comprises the production of the municipalities of Lagoa Grande (PE), Petrolina (PE), Santa Maria da Boa Vista (PE), Casa Nova (BA) and Curaçá (BA).

Although located in an area of caatinga, the localities have irrigated agricultural production, and the vines are directly connected to the São Francisco River.

According to experts, the tropical climate of the semi-arid region, the characteristics of the region and the latitude of the cities allow the harvest of grapes throughout the year and the production of wines and sparkling wines with original flavors.

In the assessment of the head of Geographical Indication Projects at the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), Wellington Gomes, the recognition allows for the appreciation of the region’s products.

“The official recognition of the Vale do São Francisco indication of origin for wines is the result of an articulated work between producers, universities and public research institutions. For the appreciation of the typical products of a country, this articulation is essential, and the participation of the State occurs in the sense of promoting rural and regional development of value chains”, he said.

In addition to the São Francisco Valley, other Brazilian regions also have an indication of origin, such as Vale dos Vinhedos and Campanha Gaúcha, in Rio Grande do Sul.

On the website of the Ministry of Agriculture it is possible to check the national and international indications registered in Brazil.
