The CEO of one of the largest cryptocurrency market makers Wintermute reported that the company had been hacked. The attackers managed to withdraw assets worth $160 million.
Evgeny Gaevoy emphasized that only systems related to decentralized finance (DeFi) projects were hacked. The systems for providing liquidity for OTC transactions and centralized cryptocurrency exchanges remained unscathed. At the same time, the company remains solvent, since Wintermute’s equity capital is twice the amount stolen.
“Hackers gained access to 90 assets, but we didn’t have much of them. We had only 2 assets worth more than $1 million, and we didn’t have more than $2.5 million. Therefore, do not expect massive sales and falling rates. We will contact the teams of these projects as soon as possible. If you have provided funds to us, then they are safe, however, if you want to withdraw money, we will do it without question,” stressed the CEO of Wintermute.
Yevgeny Gaevoy also noted that in the coming days there may be interruptions in the provision of services, but a little later everything will return to normal. He approached the hackers who hacked into the company with a request to contact Wintermute representatives as “white hat hackers”. That is, if the attackers return most of the stolen funds, then the company will not prosecute them under the law.
In mid-August, Chainalysis reported that the total damage from hacks of cryptocurrency services this year exceeded $1.9 billion.
