Wiretapping: Smells gunpowder in the Parliament – Government and opposition in the trenches

By Niki Zorba

The first meeting of the Institutions and Transparency Committee under the new administration of the EYP and against the backdrop of the wiretapping case, produced the expected tension: The opposition unanimously voted against the selection of Th. Parliament, Kostas Tasoula due to the “secrecy” of the process, new questions were born without answering any old ones.

Of course, the subject of yesterday’s meeting was planned from the beginning: Exclusively and only the approval of the new Governor of the EYP by the parties. Only the majority gave approval. That is, the government with the opposition voting against.

A report by Mr. Demiris behind closed doors due to the secrecy of the process, raised a “storm” between the government and the opposition, between ND and SYRIZA mainly, with ruling faction to quit Koumoundourou for distorting the words of Mr. Demiris, when he allegedly replied “no one is exempt” from surveillance.

SYRIZA: Others are also being monitored

As a confession of the new EYP Governor that other political figures are also being monitored (Syriza has been trumpeting this for days before Demiri’s statement), Koumoundourou “received” Demiri’s response.

Oper and made sure, through her sources, to point out after the end of the Commission meeting:

“”To repeated questions from MPs about whether there are other surveillances of politicians and journalists, he replied that ‘I have had full control of the Service for the last 15 days, no one is exempt’.

All Mr. Mitsotakis has to do now is to say publicly which other MPs and MEPs he is following, for what exact reasons, and then to resign. The “I didn’t know” and “it’s my nephew’s fault” are over. Nothing will be left in the dark.”

Leak – a harbinger of what will be shared in tomorrow’s pre-day discussion of the political leaders and the attitude of Alexis Tsipras.

PASOK: A bigger issue than Demiri’s answers

Without going into details, PASOK, through Haris Kastanidis, spoke about a major political issue that arose in the Institutions Committee from the answers of Mr. Demiris (a meeting of Char. Trikoupis executives preceded it before the meeting even ended) and requested the immediate re-opening convening of the Committee on Institutions and Transparency before tomorrow’s discussion of the political leaders in the Parliament.

“A major political issue for the government has arisen from the answers given by the nominee for the National Intelligence Service, Mr. Demiris, regarding the possible monitoring of political figures at this time. This major political issue is of paramount importance and has absolute priority in its investigation “, Mr. Kastanidis points out, requesting that the Committee on Institutions and Transparency be immediately convened before the pre-day debate in Parliament at the level of party leaders, “in order for the current EYP commander to come again and give explanations for what we called major political issue”.

Today, however, the Parliamentary Group of PASOK under Nikos Androulakis is meeting, therefore new evidence will emerge about the “line” and the tone of the party in the face of developments.
