Wiretapping: The investigation further alienates the Government-Opposition

By Niki Zorba

In the few days left until August 22, when the pending parliamentary hearings on the wiretapping case begin, the government, SYRIZA, PASOK staffs are feverishly preparing for the developments.

The government, which has accepted the request of Nikos Androulakis for the establishment of a Commission of Inquiry into the case of his surveillance (and that of the journalist Thanasis Koukakis), has for days been declaring through its sources that “yes” to an investigation, but in the long run. It will not only concern the operation of the EYP in the last few years, peaking with the interceptions that were revealed, but it will extend over a decade. Namely, it also includes the PASOK-ND government.

A proposal which the opposition sees as an attempt to “conceal” and “compromise” that instead of “plenty of light” on the case, will obscure it.

The information about the intention of the Government regarding a Commission of Inquiry over the course of a decade has been known for days ( related report by “K” ) but yesterday, with the intervention of (SKAI), the Minister of Justice, Kostas Tsiaras, confirmed them:

“Looking at all of this over time, because the discussion has focused on what happened in the recent past, it makes sense to look at this over a certain length of time. To see if there were specific or different practices in the past, during the tenure of different governments, and to take stock and see what initiatives we need to take.”

PASOK proposal

Her the chairman asked for the establishment of an inquiry committee of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis, as soon as he was informed that in addition to the attempt to entrap him with the malicious predator software, he was “legally” monitored by the EYP during the quarter when the intra-party succession race at KINAL was underway and he himself was its prospective president.

Harilaou Trikoupi has announced from the outset that she will file a proposal for a Commission of Inquiry regarding what has come to light in the last few days and concerns the practices and operation of the EYP during this administration.

Oper means, barring a (very) shocking windfall, the rejection of the government’s proposal to consider the case “over time”.

SYRIZA and investigation

Koumoundourou, as far as the Commission of Inquiry is concerned, has first declared through Alexis Tsipras that it is “self-evident”, but it is not enough. It is reserved for a preliminary investigation committee, whenever it is given the opportunity.

In this context, SYRIZA, as it has been throughout this case, will support Harilaou Trikoupi’s proposal for the inquiry, widening the rift between the government, major and minor opposition.

Within the week, the executive office of SYRIZA, former “political center”, will meet, where the close associates of its president (N. Iliopoulos, Rania Svigou, G. Vassiliadis, Ol. Gerovasilis, Efi Ahtsioglou, Rena Dourou and Marilisa Xenogiannakopoulou) will participate ).
