Wiretapping: The PNP with the ‘security’ valves, the deep rift between N.D-PASOK and the questions

By Niki Zorba

The issuance of the Legislative Content Act was immediatey for the changes in the EYP in the direction of further “filters” for the operation of the National Intelligence Service, in relation (and) to the monitoring of political figures.

However, it was preceded by another “heavy” political 24 hours on the issue of wiretapping, with objections ( G. Gerapetritis v. Ev. Venizelou and then again, regarding the criticism expressed by the former president of PASOK about the prime minister) and with Maximos insisting: Why does Nikos Androulakis so persistently refuse to be informed competently about the reason for his surveillance?

The issue also caused the intervention of the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou, which insisted on the need for an immediate clarification of the case, noting at the same time that the “protection of the privacy of communication is a fundamental condition of a democratic and liberal society”.

The monitoring material and the exam

The rift between Charilaos Trikoupis and Maximou is getting deeper and deeper these days and while the bra de fer Androulakis-Maximos is still in full swing, regarding the reason the President of PASOK was monitored by the EYP.

Mr. Androulakis requests that the Government publicly explain the reason for his monitoring, with the Government consistently answering him (yesterday and through the Government Representative): Come and be informed, why are you refusing?

A new question was also raised yesterday regarding the monitoring of Mr. Androulakis: Where is the material collected during his three-month monitoring and if it has been destroyed.

He left open the possibility that it was already destroyed, the Government Spokesperson, describing the usual procedure, without however going into the essence of the specific case.

After August 22, when the Parliament will open and the Conference of Presidents will take place, the details of the Commission of Inquiry for the monitoring requested by the president of PASOK will be clarified. Most likely, the investigation in question from the government’s side, will not be limited to the current case of monitoring Androulakis, but will “grab” the thread for the operation of the EYP since 2015. That is, the period of the SYRIZA government should also be included in the frame.

From Harilaou Trikoupi however, it is made clear that her demand that the government publicly answer “why” was monitored by the EYP for three months (during the intra-party race of KINAL) the then MEP of the party and candidate for its leader, while they raise up the issue of Predator and the surveillance of the journalist, Thanasis Koukakis.

The barometric low between Harilaos Trikoupis – Maximos, the hammering of SYRIZA and the heavy climate that prevails in the Government until it actually achieves the “flight forward” and the change of the agenda, keeps alive scenarios of early elections in the Autumn, which in the government flatly rejects each case.

A “sharp” no, was Mr. Economou’s response from the press room, when asked about it.

SYRIZA: They are delaying because they are afraid

Koumoundourou now requests on a daily basis with her initiatives that the political time “run” faster. Tthe immediate opening of the Parliament was requested on Monday, but it was not accepted (according to what Koumoundourou meant by “immediate”).

It came back yesterday with a new request: The Institutions and Transparency Committee should meet within the week and that the former and current Governors of the EYP, the former Secretary of the Prime Minister G. Dimitriadis, the president of the Communications Privacy Assurance Authority and the Prosecutor assigned to the EYP attend the hearing.

The indirect no that they received minutes from the Government (since all parliamentary work is set for after 22.08), led SYRIZA to a new attack: They play delays because they are afraid, is the conclusion of the official opposition, which nevertheless insists: Aeolos’ bag opened and they can’t hide anything.
