With -11.4°C, Itatiaia National Park, in Rio, has a record of cold in the year

The temperature reached -11.4°C at dawn this Tuesday (14), at Campo Belo Station, on the banks of the river of the same name, in Itatiaia National Park, in the interior of Rio de Janeiro. The phenomenon was recorded around 00:07. After two o’clock in the morning, because of the cold, the station, located at an altitude of about 2,440 meters, stopped working.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) also has a station, located in another part of the environmental conservation unit, which celebrates its 85th anniversary this Tuesday. She recorded the temperature of -7.8°C, around 7 am. The two data represent a record of cold measured in the country in 2022.

Inmet meteorologist Mamedes Luiz Melo says that the number measured by the institute is a record, but says he understands that it is not very representative.

“The station is at a very high and isolated point inside the park, which has very specific conditions, which are not reproduced in the cities of the region. It’s a record because it’s an even lower temperature than the -7.7°C recorded on May 22, when we had a polar air mass”, says the expert.

Director of Itatiaia National Park, Colonel Luiz Aragão explains that the real temperatures in the season that recorded -11.4°C may have been even lower.

“The season ‘froze’ with the cold. We believe it was between -12°C and -12.5°C”, says Aragão.
