The manifesto in defense of democracy, which emerged from the initiative of students, professors and the board of the USP Law School (FDUSP), has already gathered more than 210 thousand signatures until the morning of this Thursday (28).
The organization of the letter told the CNN that, since the signatures were opened to the general public last Tuesday (26), there have been more than 1,500 attempts at hacking attacks against the website that collects the names of signatories.
Details of the cyber attacks were not given because the organizers do not want to give gaps to reveal how the site’s defense is prepared for this type of situation.
Another concern of the manifesto organizers, as reported to CNN, is the malicious inclusion of false signatures among the signatories of the manifesto. According to the organization, there is a system that is checking the authenticity of names: “It’s a lot of work, but it’s going well.”
The “Letter to Brazilians” will be read in an act at FDUSP, in São Francisco square, in São Paulo, on August 11th.
The Federation of Industries of the State of São Paulo (Fiesp) confirmed to the CNN, this Thursday (28), which is preparing a parallel manifesto with other civil society organizations – which will bring together the signatures of entities, rather than individuals.
The reading of the “Letter to Brazilians” will be in charge of the former minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Celso de Mello. The disclosure of the document was anticipated by the analyst of CNN Gaius Junqueira.
Among the signatories are renowned personalities, former ministers of the STF and ministers of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), for example.
For example, the initial disclosure already included the signatures of artists Arnaldo Antunes and Chico Buarque and former STF ministers such as Carlos Ayres Britto, Sepúlveda Pertence, Sydney Sanches, Celso de Mello, Carlos Velloso, Joaquim Barbosa and Nelson Jobim, in addition to bankers Roberto Setúbal and Cândido Bracher, former presidents of Itaú Unibanco.
In the update this Wednesday (27), STF ministers Rogerio Schietti and Sebastião Alves dos Reis Júnior, lawyer Luciana Temer, daughter of former president Michel Temer, doctor Paulo Chapchap, CEO of Hospital Sírio Libanês, and actors Edson Celulari and Helio de La Peña, joined the list.
In an interview with CNN this Wednesday, the director of FDUSP, Celso Fernandes Campilongo, said that the manifesto is a reaction to the attacks on the courts, the electoral system and the electronic voting machines. As he explained, this situation “clearly has the intention of generating distrust in relation to the institutions”.
“One of the foundations of democracy is precisely trust in institutions,” observed Campilongo.
The director also pointed out that the attacks are carried out “without evidence, without documentation and without proof”, which makes democracy “feel under siege”.
Regarding the bankers’ support for the letter, Campilongo highlighted that the impacts on the economy can occur due to the instability that the accusations, threat of rupture and distrust in institutions generate. This situation could, according to the director, alienate foreign investors from Brazil.
“From a legal point of view, an elementary data for economic development is legal certainty”, he added.
