After a heat wave, a cold front loaded with heavy rains caused deaths and damage in cities in Southeast Brazil, especially in the state of São Paulo – and there are still risks identified for this week.
So far, at least 24 people died as a result of the storms in the state of São Paulo. The disturbances also left around 660 families homeless or displaced, seven people injured and eight missing, the Civil Defense said.
According to Climatempo, there is a condition for severe rain throughout the north-central and northwest of São Paulo, Vale do Paraíba, Greater São Paulo, south of Minas Gerais, Triângulo Mineiro, northeast of Mato Grosso do Sul and extreme southeast of Goiás.
In an interview with CNNthe head of weather forecast at the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), Assis Diniz, warned of the possibility of significant rains until next Wednesday (2).
São Paulo
Landslides and floods were recorded in several regions of São Paulo in recent days, with consequences still under evaluation.
One of the landslides, in Franco da Rocha, in Greater São Paulo, affected a family composed of a mother and two children: no one survived in the house. In Várzea Paulista, in the interior of the state, five people died after a land displacement, including three children.

The state government announced the immediate release of R$ 15 million to ten cities affected by the storms.
In an updated alert this Monday (31), Inmet classified a large part of the interior of São Paulo as an area of ”great danger” due to the forecast storms. The forecast is that it will rain 60 millimeters per hour or more than 100 millimeters in the day.
In addition to the São Paulo Metropolitan Region, cities such as Presidente Prudente, São José do Rio Preto, Campinas, Bauru, Piracicaba, Ribeirão Preto, Araçatuba, Marília, Araraquara, Assis, Itapetininga and Vale do Paraíba are included in the alert. There are also risks for north-central Mato Grosso do Sul.
Rio de Janeiro
This Monday, the capital of Rio de Janeiro returned to a “state of normality” in the monitoring of rains – Rio was in the “mobilization stage” since Friday (28).
The state has already suffered from the volume of rains for two weeks. On the occasion, the Civil Defense and the Fire Department were called for more than 90 occurrences, most of which were called to rescue stranded people and cut trees.

The Civil Defense of Espírito Santo has not yet indicated any general alert for the expected rains in the state, but this week may bring precipitation above 100 mm in much of the territory.
Rains at the beginning of the year have already strongly hit Minas Gerais and Bahia
At least 25 people died in Minas Gerais as a result of the rains at the end of last year and January of this year, according to the latest balance released on January 22 by the state Civil Defense. In total, 48,607 people were displaced and another 7,735 were homeless.
Bahia recorded at least 27 dead and 523 injured by the storms. There were 30,306 homeless and 62,156 homeless. In all, 965,643 people were affected, according to information from the Superintendence of Protection and Civil Defense of Bahia (Sudec), on January 17.
