The number of victims of the cataclysmic floods in Pakistan continued to rise on Saturday (3), with 57 more deaths, 25 of them children. The country faces a rescue and relief operation.
A high-level body created to coordinate the emergency effort, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, met in Islamabad for the first time on Saturday to take stock of the disaster.
Record-breaking monsoon rains and melting glaciers in the northern mountains caused flooding that affected 33 million people and killed at least 1,265, including 441 children. The flood, attributed to climate change, is still spreading.
The proportion of child deaths has raised concern. On Friday, the United Nations Children’s Agency (UNICEF) said there was a risk of “much more” child deaths from disease following the floods.
