With 600,000 adults with a delayed second dose, Rio is taking part in the vaccination campaign

The city of Rio de Janeiro will hold on Saturday (20) the launch of the Mega Vaccination campaign, by the Ministry of Health, in order to encourage Brazilians who have not returned to vaccination posts to take the second dose or booster dose.

The municipality has around 600,000 adults with a delayed vaccination schedule.

The vaccine effort will take place simultaneously in six Brazilian capitals: São Paulo (SP), Manaus (AM), Curitiba (PR), Brasília (DF) and Salvador (BA).

Across the city of Rio de Janeiro, teams are actively searching, at strategic points, for those who still need to complete the vaccination schedule.

For Saturday (20), the “D Day”, which will have the presence of the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, in the city, it is expected that 100,000 people will be vaccinated.

“This is the biggest challenge, identifying who has not yet taken the doses. We have approximately 380 thousand teenagers in this situation”, explained Soranz.

Counting on the teenagers, there are almost 600 thousand people with the second dose overdue in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

booster dose

Last Thursday (18th), the Municipal Health Department of Rio launched the new calendar for boosting the vaccine against Covid-19.

From November 29th to January 4th of next year, people between 59 and 55 years old who have taken the second dose (D2) for at least three months will be invited, according to age groups.

Cariocas from 18 years old who received the last application at least five months ago can now go to the health center to receive the extra dose.

The city of Rio was one of the first in the country to start applying the booster dose, in September, and has already surpassed the mark of one million people vaccinated with RD.

Elderly people, people with a high degree of immunosuppression and health workers are the groups that have already received the complementary dose in the vaccine schedule.

Until this Saturday (20), the reinforcement schedule for the elderly will be complete, with the recap for all people over 60 years old who have not yet taken the reinforcement.

Janssen

Soranz spoke about the importance of the booster dose and commented on the planning for those who received the Janssen vaccine.

“All over the world, this vaccine is considered a single dose, in Rio it could not be different. We are also considering a booster dose for people who received this immunizing agent, not a second dose”, he pointed out.

According to Soranz, 170 thousand people in Rio de Janeiro received the Janssen vaccine. He stated that the Ministry of Health guaranteed the delivery of a batch with approximately 200,000 brand immunization agents to start strengthening these people in early December.
