Forty countries, including EU members the US and Britain, today called on Russia, in a joint declaration, to immediately stop “military operations in Ukraine” and said they supported Kiev’s appeal to the International Court of Justice.
In this declaration, released in New York, the countries express their support for Ukraine’s appeal against Russia to the International Court of Justice based on the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Suppression of the Crime of Genocide, with the aim of proving that the Moscow’s military intervention has no legal basis and is based on “baseless allegations of genocide”.
The text recalls that the Court demanded that Moscow stop the war on March 16, 2022.
“Russia must be held accountable for its actions (…) the losses and damages suffered by Ukraine (…) require full and urgent compensation” from Moscow, the declaration added.
According to Ukraine, at least $750 billion will be needed to rebuild the country after the war.
The International Court of Justice is based in The Hague and its decisions are binding and irrevocable. It bases its verdict mainly on treaties and conventions, but has no means of forcing any country to abide by its decisions.
