The price of wheat on the Chicago Stock Exchange, in the United States, hit the historic record of US$ 12.94 per bushel on Monday (7), pressured by the war between Russia and Ukraine, two major grain producers.
The mark exceeds the price reached in March 2008, of US$ 12.83, in the commodities boom.
Since the start of the confrontation, wheat has already risen 46.25% in Chicago. In the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, the ton of grain reached R$ 1,960, a record price and with a high of 26% in one week, points out the consultancy Safras & Mercado.
The soaring price of wheat is beginning to be felt by supermarkets in negotiations with suppliers.
The Paulista Association of Supermarkets (Apas) received reports from supermarkets pointing out that flour prices had already increased by 15% in the last week and that there would be indications of new adjustments of this magnitude.
In the case of soybean oil, another product that is influenced by wheat, the industry price would have been marked up by about 20% in a week.
“It’s a warning sign”, says Rodrigo Marinheiro, institutional relations executive at Apas. He says that this price increase has not yet been captured by the inflation indicator of supermarkets in February, but should appear this month, including reflections on derivatives chains, such as pasta, cookies and other oils, such as corn and sunflower.
same move
The fear of the Apas executive is that what happened recently with rice will be repeated with wheat, when national producers exported the grain, which boosted prices on the domestic market.
In recent weeks, market information indicated that Brazilian mills were stocked. Therefore, this new price table for flour presented to supermarkets by the mills would already be taking into account the cost of replacing the grain, which is higher.
no interference
Asked about the price readjustments of wheat flour by the mills, the Brazilian Wheat Industry Association (Abitrigo) informed, through its advisory, that “the entity does not discuss price, as each company makes the decision that best meets its needs”. interests”.
According to Élcio Bento, a wheat analyst at consulting firm Safras & Mercado, mills are returning to purchases and are now facing difficulties in closing deals because wheat is costing almost 30% more in reais than before the war.
Bento said that foreign mills are coming to buy the wheat crop in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul and pay the producer almost R$ 2 thousand per ton. “Brazil is an importer of wheat, but it is exporting,” said Bento. Last month, exports from Rio Grande do Sul totaled 1.025 million tons to the Middle East and Asia.
